Hyderabad: The vibrant mix of history and modernity

Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, continues to have the vestiges of its medieval past, that can be seen merging with the modern aspirations and local cultures.  The city is also the cultural and financial centre of the state and is lauded for its traditional cuisine, biryani. Hyderabad has a very rich history that dates back to 15th century when the Muslim prince Quli Qutub Shah had fallen in love with the beautiful Bhagmati, a Hindu commoner.  He would ride out of his Golconda Palace every night to meet his beloved, residing in the village along the Musi River. Eventually he became King and she his Queen and they ruled from the new capital city that was founded on love.

Built in 1591, Charminar is one of the major attractions of Hyderabad. It was constructed by Muhammed Quli Qutub Shah as a memorial to mark the end of an epidemic. The four arches of the minaret faces four cardinal directions. The Mecca Mosque close to Charminar is another main attraction of the city. The Salarjung Museum here has an amazing assortment of objects and art from all over the world.  One can go to Hussain Sagar Lake to spend some lone quality time. Ramoji Film City, Birla Temlpe, Falaknuma Palace and Golconda Fort are some other not-to-miss sights of Hyderabad city. Travellers can visit during the Deccan festival held every year in February and enjoy the cultural side of Hyderabad.
