Yoga / Ayurveda

Yoga / AyrurvedaAyurveda in India is not something new. Ayurveda  has a mention in the world's oldest philosophical text, the Rig Veda. This ancient form of medicine developed in India during the Vedic period, about 5000 years ago. The word ayurveda is made up from two words ayur and veda meaning 'Science of Life'. Ayurveda is not merely a medicinal therapy, it is rather a way of life. Ayurveda firmly believes that life is not merely about the body but it is a combination of mind, soul and senses with body. Ayurveda deals with physical as well as spiritual health.

Ayurveda is composed of eight branches:

  • Kaya Chikitsa - Internal Medicine
  • Kaumarabhritya Tantra - Pediatrics
  • Bhoot vidya - Psychiatry and psycho somatic
  • Shalakya Tantra -Diseases of eye, ear, head, nose, throat and its surgery
  • Shalya Tantra - Surgery
  • Agada Tantra - Toxicology
  • Rasayana Chikitsa - Rejuvenation Therapy
  • Vajikarana Chikitsa – Reproductive Therapy

The treatments in Ayurveda not only cure a disease but treat it from the root cause. Ayurveda does not only aim at the treating of a disease but it promotes the over all well-being of a person. All the remedies and suggestions of Ayurveda are natural. Not just physical cure, Ayurveda cures emotionally, mentally and spiritually as well.

Ayurveda puts it up this way. Every individual's structure is composed of five elements, earth, fire, water, space and air. There are three biological humors in all governing the functional aspect of the body. Ayurveda includes the preparation of medicines at home using the traditional methods. The best part of an ayurvedic treatment is that these naturally prepared medicines do not have side effects until consumed in the prescribed amount.

India is far-famed for its reliable ayurveda treatments. There are various treatment centers in different parts of the country, Kerala being the most popular one. The authentic treatments in Kerala invite tourists from India and abroad. Out of the various therapies of ayurveda, Pachkarma is the one that is used extensively. It helps eliminating the wastes from the human body thereby making it healthy. Ayurveda is not merely restricted to curing a disease but it describes the diet, actions and lifestyle to be followed for a healthy living.

Today, Ayurveda has become an immensely popular medicinal form. This subtle yet scientific method aims to cure a person in totality, the mind and the spirit along with the body. Thus it can be said that ayurveda acquires an edge in comparison to the other methods of healing. Ayurveda, therefore, has been the world's longest ongoing medicinal tradition. It is a gift that India has given to the world.
